Our History

Fundraising for the Hospice began in 1999 when the four Rotary Clubs of Burlington committed a pledge of $250,000 toward developing the Hospice. Burlington resident Len Carpenter donated $500,000 to the project, earning him the right to choose the name for the new Hospice. St. Stephen United Church generously offered to lease a piece of property adjacent to its parking lot for “one dollar and a rose” a year. The lease is for 100 years! On May 25, 2002, Carpenter Hospice officially opened its doors to our first residents.

Our Programs & Services

Carpenter Hospice offers community-based programs for people dealing with a life-limiting illness or grief. Our now 11-bedroom hospice has welcomed over 3,000 people who have given our staff and volunteers the privilege of being a part of their end-of-life journey. We also support people dealing with grief or a life-limiting illness by offering community-based services such as bereavement and supportive care, and a wellness program offering music therapy, yoga, massage and more. All of our programs and services are offered at no cost. Carpenter Hospice is supported by more than 150 volunteers and by the tremendous support of the Burlington community.
